Time to plant

Our thoughts are currently on the areas soon to be prepared in all those countries which plant in the spring. As the 2003/2004 campaign was reasonably good in consumption terms, we are all fearful that growers will be planting more, and therefore too much, particularly in the non-contracted sector. The scenario for a poor 2005 campaign is looming on the horizon. GERMICOPA has always defended the idea that a protected variety, whose breeder can control the quantities sold, is an element that, combined with a contract policy, provides a better structure for the market. Too much freedom damages freedom, some discipline is always needed. From this standpoint, knowing how to regulate the market by producing the quantities necessary to satisfy customer needs, and no more, constitutes the basis of a sensible policy. This is what we have always maintained. We hope it will be remembered when it's time to plant!
